Because I don't know how comparable the situation is to Kylo. Is the guy just an evil dick, was he manipulated and abused, what's his relationship with the hero like, etc?

*deep sigh*
He had a difficult childhood, got superpowers when his friends were murdered and he nearly died of suffocation, his home was destroyed by a monster, he was captured by brainwashing secret police, he escaped, moved halfway around the world, and promptly became another asshole gang leader.
He tried to kill the protagonist the first time they met (in an impersonal, 'flee or be destroyed', sort of way), and she beat him. He tried more enthusiastically to kill her, and she beat him. Some time later they worked together to save the world from utter annihilation.

I don't know how bad he really is if he helped save the world. Plus being brainwashed means he wouldn't be fully responsible for the bad stuff he did.

If it's the canon I'm thinking of, he broke the brainwashing when he escaped and it had nothing to do with his later actions, especially as a gang leader.

And saving the world when otherwise everything would have been destroyed just meant the bad guys would have quite liked to stay alive, not an action done out of the kindness of their heart.

Oh! Oh! Have you ever explored fic on a forum? There's one where they (and a few other characters) time travel to the past.

It's not explicitly shippy iirc (it's been years since I read it) but the author is into it and the outside characters think they're lovers because they're pretty intense about each other and the fic plays that up.

My fave memory is him talking about the times she just fucking brutalised him and everyone else is like, um why do you sound like you were super into it now??

I love the bit where he's fighting... someone? IDK. And the guy he's fighting is on comms to a third party who's using their Thinker powers to read his history, and says something like "When they first met, she rotted his crotch off" and the guy he's fighting looks at him, all - y'know - hulked out, and is just like... how? How would that work???
