+1

the ability to separate ppl based on ship/show was what made fandom at least okay to navigate, that and having good mods made or broke a comm.

eg: one comm i was in was lovely, everyone was nice, we all agreed to keep out of each others space if we didn't agree bc any stupid wank would risk you being banned so it kept ppl in check.

in another comm the mods enjoyed ppl fighting and arguing with one another, it was an absolute garbage-fire mess of wank and petty, ridiculous arguments, including personal attacks and death threats lobbed at ppl bc they liked something different to another person. it was every bit as nasty as some sections of tumblr get. but bc no one wants to admit that fandom has always been kind of stupid ppl pretend that this sort of thing is new, it's not.

[oh and lets not get into how one comm i was on outright banned any lgbt ships/content, yup, such a wonderful bastion of fandom goodness]

fandom wasn't better behaved back on LJ, it was better moderated and more controlled. tubmlr isn't and what we've seen over the years is the result of how fans really act when there's no consequences for their behavior.
