Stuff like zines typically aren't making a profit, though. They're just covering the costs of publication, since none of that is free. I have several friends who have worked on zines and none of them actually made any money off it, it all went into getting the zines printed.

That's the definitely the case in certain circumstances, but I've seen a fair few fanart zines explicitly for profit and geared towards FOTM or juggernaut fandoms. The amount of profit isn't disclosed, of course, but I've seen charity zines with lesser specs donate between 1500 and 3500 bucks.
