With my mom, it was probably some combination of the first two. She took me out after second grade because I was shaping up to be a Problem Child (probably b/c of undiagnosed ADHD and Autism because she refused to have me tested when someone pointed it out in preschool).

But she also thought I was too smart for the school I was in, but I didn't pass the test to skip a grade. So she pulled me out to experiment with a Classical Education. She was also an English major in college so my English education was impeccable. But I was struggling to teach myself math and science out of text books because she didn't know shit except English Lit.

Though somehow I managed to pass the yearly end-of-year exams and got into the local community college at 16 (with remedial level math classes of course).

But part of the education was also mandatory Youth Group with her religious group with such fascinating activities as Scribing Like The Ancient Jews Did It. =.= And she was surprised when I wanted nothing to do with her group by 16.
