maybe that's next season!

That was definitely my assumption.

OP

That's what I'm hoping... It's clear Hargreeves wanted all of them, so it feels like they're kinda sweeping them under the rug right now with little to no explanation.

Wikipedia calls them the surviving seven, so...

OP

Now I can't help but think Hargreeves had an 'alternate' way of dealing with the other kids if the mothers didn't want to hand them over.

It's dark, but I assume most didn't survive into adulthood. Being so blatantly different from everybody around you (powers or not, simply from the way they were born), the other children and teenagers calling you a freak and monster and ostracizing you, your mother wanting to love you but unable to forget the trauma of your birth, the rest of your family distrustful and blaming you for the unhappiness of your mother's depression, or why their father left them and the cuckoo child... I imagine many killed themselves, and others were killed. People can still get beaten up for gay panic or tortured in exorcisms. I doubt it always went well when these kids tried to kiss someone or developed powers. And that's not counting the ones who were killed and disappeared right after birth.

The Hargreeves at least had each other.

I always just assumed some of the mothers kept the babies, some died, and some didn't have the potential to develop any powers.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-01 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
OP

I have a hard time believing they didn't develop powers, it'd seem too convenient that only the seven Hargreeves got were the 'gifted' ones. I think it was implied that the ones he couldn't buy were kept by family, but even by the circumstances of their birth I'd be nice to see even a news clipping of a 'where are they now' about the other instabirth babies.

Given how traumatic the births were across the board (think about how much preparation the body goes through during pregnancy--and then imagine having none of that ready for a completely spontaneous birth), I wouldn't be at all shocked if many of them died in childbirth or soon after. Labor is risky enough without any complications.

The ones who were kept by their families who didn't die of these powers are just.... out there I guess?

I thought a lot of them died in the comics. And they're all supposed to be Jesus or something.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-01 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
OP

Huh, did not know that... Seems strange, but here's hoping they get more of a spotlight in the show. (Jesus? I mean I guess with the powers and everything..?)

Spoilers from the comic

In Hotel Oblivion Issue #4, #5 & #6 mother seems to be in contact with a mysterious group and tries to get vanya to connect with them (rather forcefully) someone with a domino mask and powers (she heals vanya who at this point is still paralyzed) approaches vanya and wants to take her "home" to their "family", they get to norway
now, in the comic there are plenty of other people with powers constantly shown but they are all villains
so far none of the other siblings born on that day have been identified
maybe some are indeed villains now with their powers, who knows?
but the young woman who healed vanya seems to be implied to be someone from a place similar to the umbrella academy
especially with the whole "family" talk and the mystery surrounding it, plus mother is involved
so far nothing has been confirmed in the comics either, that's all there is
but I am sure the other siblings are still out there in the world, maybe some have died like ben, but the majority is probably somewhere alive and it seems that there might be a couple of them who have grouped together
the woman has a round little patch on her collar with a little sparrow inside, so it seems to be some kind of mirror organization for the umbrella academy, still it's all really creepy and might not be good-natured, mother herself is a little forceful and mean

so with that, we have to see where the comics are going with this and if they confirm the high suspicion that the other kids born on that day are involved and then it will probably get addressed in the tv series too (probably with way better writing, because sorry, I still don't see how the comics were able to win any award, the writing is a mess and the focus always lies on some over the top action or all the edgy stuff without caring to explain plot related shit for ages, so I trust the tv adaptation to make something worthwhile out of the crumbs again)
