Comic books and movies, aren't the same, though. And they shouldn't have tried to do something that really only works in comic books.

I disagree. These movies are adaptations of comics. They're an attempt to bring not only the characters and plots but also comics' storytelling conventions from the pages to the screen. They started small at first, self-contained stories grounded in realism, because they knew the audience would need time to adjust. By now, they've earned it. Endgame feels like the proper crossover event finale that it is (and crossover events aren't everyone's cuppa tea even in comics).
