I'm just always upset when I don't get enough Katie McGrath

I went in expecting her to be in JW a lot more than she actually was. Her death seemed excessively cruel. I clocked her as someone unlikely to survive the runtime as soon as she appeared but even for a "dinos run rampant eating everyone" film her death scene went on *FAR* too long.

Apparently they cut out a lot of her scenes where she was supposed to be antagonistic to the kids so her ending reflects that...they just...cut all the parts that built up to it.

I watched a video once where someone analyzed how unnecessarily cruel her death was and I just spent 20 minutes trying to find it again with no luck.

Ah I think I remember seeing someone a while ago saying her role was much bigger and she was a little more "villainous" for lack of a better word.

I'm still not sure if I'd be ok with that considering she got the kids pushed onto her by someone else who should've been looking after them instead. I was actually talking about this topic (death in film) just last night, this weird sort of requirement that there has to be death to make a story realistic but sometimes it really jars with the overall narrative. I was talking about 'Jaws' and how I think I wouldn't have cared at all had the Mayor got eaten by the shark, despite the fact there could be the argument he was doing what he felt was right, blinkered as it was. I guess how you feel about a supporting character death all depends on how the framing of the story presents that character.

That kinda seems fitting for the writing of that movie overall, like between the mom telling Bryce Dallas Howard's character 'WHEN you have kids' and the whole 'awesome dude vs. meany career woman'; I'm not surprised that they'd see 'poor babysitting' as this cardinal sin for a female character.

IDK about videos, but BirthMoviesDeath definitely wrote a piece on how off-tone that part was.

I agree.

I really gotta agree. Dr. Sattler was amazing and awesome and *smart* and capable, and didn't fall into any of the annoying 'girl friend' or 'damsel' tropes.

Plus, you know....Laura Dern.

What a burning hot take. No one has complained about this before. Revolutionary.

I mean, you're not wrong but. Who tf would care if you said this in namespace.

Calm down, most secrets that pass through this place these days don't pass muster. Just keepin' the flame alive, you know?

There's nothing in the rules that say all secret content must be 100% original and a unique point of view. If it bothers you, please make and submit your own, super fresh takes on fandom and let us know which ones they are so we can applaud you for your creativity.

Oh looks like someone has taken the liberty of being the Fandom Secrets Police. OP you are hereby fined $1000 in Schrute bucks. Pay up or forever be shamed for not making the right kind of secret.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-04 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
What a bizarre thing to get butthurt about, on this site no less. Makes me think you don't actually agree with OP at all and are mad they're criticizing the shitty movie you like.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-04 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, there are always entitled anons who like to whine.

"Why is this a secreeeeeet?"
"This is really ancient news tho?"
"Lots of people have this opinion!"

Etc. etc. I doubt they're submitting secrets themselves, but they think they've got the right to complain about the ones others submit.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-04 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
There's actually a lot of older films I feel this way about but yeah 100% agree.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-04 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed

I mean, the nanny/PA/whatever she was was intended to be disposable in the same way a few of the male characters were, but... what's wrong with Claire?

She was smart, in charge, good at her job. Yes she had flaws in the sense that she thought her job was the be all and end all above caring (even about her job as pointed out when her boss asks her how the dinosaurs are doing), but she learned to care while still being good at her job?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-04 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
What's wrong is that Claire was portrayed as an uptight killjoy for being an ambitious career oriented woman.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I didn't see her that way, but okay?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-04 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I just wasted a few minutes skimming through Wiki on the writing for the films and what a mess. I also took into consideration the year each film was released, and the JP/JW series is a good look at the ways big franchise blockbuster films have changed. It's just so strange and frustrating to me that the writers/producers for the series now think that they're being progressive when they are doing the opposite. Unless they're doing it on purpose?

I mean they out and out say it. "No one's impressed with a stegasaurus anymore." and "If you wanted me to make them realistic they'd have feathers."

Paraphrasing but you know what I mean.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-04 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, yes, Dr. Sattler, whose entire thing was, "I want kids and ur wrong to not want them." Yes, she was competent in 1. But the only times she reappeared it was as a housewife pretty much and that's pretty egregious to me.
