Buttercup is stagnant, has negative character depth and no growth in The Princess Bride. She is simply a plot object and is meaningless apart from what she adds to Westley's narrative.

I don't think any characters in TPB are really marked by great character depth or growth? It's not really that kind of movie

She does try to save his life in the movie when she makes Humperdinck promise to let him go? Not that it's effective. Have you read the book? It kind of lampshades all these tropes.

I mean, that kinda goes for Wesley too? In that, while he gets a bit more development, we don't actually get to see it. He just leaves the narrative for a bit as a surly farm boy, and comes back into it as a dashing adventurer there to kidnap/save his girl, with pretty much no visible in-between. He doesn't exactly grow through his quest to save Buttercup, he just fulfills it. They're kinda both just two halves of a romance there to fulfill their roles in the plot.

I don't disagree, but I think that kind of comes with the territory in fairy tales. They're archetypes, not complex characters.

Wow, I totally thought you were going to say Buttercup from Power Puff Girls, and I was gonna be really offended... but then I learned how to read, and I have to say I agree.

I think the only people who have character depth and grow are Inigo and Fezzik tbh?
