... well now I feel weird because I have never done that and I didn't even know it was a thing, either. I don't reach into my purse to get my keys until I'm at my car/door and pretty much everyone I know does the same thing?

I don't know anybody who would do that, just because there are too many jackasses and nutjobs out there.

I don't feel comfortable not having my keys at hand and ready to go.

Not saying you're weird or 'asking for it' or anything; maybe where you live is really safe, feels safe, and you're good to go.

Which is nice.

Yeah, I live in an area that has virtually no crime. I walk around by myself at night and feel perfectly safe. I've been living here for 35 years and the worst thing that has ever happened has been people smashing car windows to grab iPhones and things like that.

We're basically smack-dab in the middle of heroin central *and* meth central, and lots of guys from the military base and passing through on the highway, so.... Eh. I don't fear for my life every second, but there are a lot of fuckheads around here, and a lot of them are high, or armed, or both.

Same. I also walk home from work at 10pm by myself (with headphones on).

Yep, I do the same. It's about a mile from where I work to my house and I have walked it at 4 AM when we do inventory.

Same here, sometimes later. My boss from my last job drove past me once on the way home from a night out with headphones on and she kept shouting out her window at me to "get in the car, what are you doing walking around at night with your MUSIC ON, you could get STABBED"
