I also hate the 'women walking through dark car park, no keys in hand, fumbles for keys in huge, stuffed bag after hearing weird noise'. I don't know a single woman who doesn't walk out of the house/shop/office/whatever with her keys already in her hand, ready to go.

Same. And I wouldn't even say I live in a particularly dangerous area or anything (luckily my neighborhood is safe, I've lived here almost 12 years and am not aware of any crimes in that time period other than like five years ago 2 or 3 people had their cars broken into and loose change/random stuff stolen; I feel safe going out in the middle of the night, etc.), but it is a large-ish city and I feel like being cautious is just common sense. My mom has a friend who lives a couple hours away in this super small town and she doesn't lock the door of her house, doesn't lock her car door, has LEFT HER PURSE in her unlocked car...that kind of thing just completely baffles me.

Eh, yeah, that's a bit much. There's too much important stuff in my bag to just leave it lying.
