Well, you didn't miss much. The prompt just happened to be my usual 'net handle, though, so I couldn't resist a ruthless breaking of all of the rules. If I remember right, I died in paragraph three or so. Then the characters seized control of my computer and continued the fic.

Anyway.

On a more relevant note, you're right, there's nothing wrong with original characters...in general. I think the success original characters in fandom depends on part what you're writing for and how you go about doing it. I can't speak for Mass Effect, but the other three shows you mentioned are pretty good examples of open-ended and very friendly worlds to throw in OCs. Pokemon's got plenty of room for a new Gym Leader or people adventuring in a different part of the world. Star Wars...the expanded universe thrives on input and new material, and I find that the further one gets away from George Lucas' trilogies the more I like it. It's just...big, fun to play in.

But part of the problem with OCs, I think, is that some...a lot of people take characters and shoehorn them into situations in which they just don't fit. You know. People who take a setting and immediately go for the tenth (generally female) member of the Fellowship of the Ring, or a new super secret X-man who just happens to have ties to the other characters. Or they otherwise take an insular group and add in new people regardless of the original dynamics, how they worked, and how new individuals would influence said dynamics.

Which isn't necessarily bad in itself, and can be interesting if done well, thoughtfully, and/or with style. Usually...it's not. At least, it's done poorly enough that there's the current dread of the original character which you commented on in the secret above.

....assuming that's you I'm talking to, OP. If you're a new person, hi.

But...yeah. I write OCs. I write OCs in my original worlds, in fandom, and whatever the hell I damn well feel like writing, and screw what people say. But I'm not exactly the best...uh...judge of the norm. Get me bored enough and I'd write a Star Wars/Naruto/Pokemon crossover and somehow try to make it work.
