Why does "She's older than my mom" merit making your feelings secret?

Especially when it's someone as strikingly beautiful as Lisa Edelstein?

Wear your older woman lust with PRIDE, people!

Jesus.

Dude, you really DO have MILF-dar. How did you know this secret was going to be posted? Amazing. Frightening but amazing. Bravo.

Because normal people find it uncomfortable finding someone who could easily -be- their mother attractive?

Just sayin'.

[identity profile] box-in-the-box.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
No, you're wrong.

Unless there was some secret adoption, secret affair, hospital mix-up or insemination mix-up, there is no way that this woman could be your mother, no matter how close she is to your mother in age.

Otherwise, beauty is beauty is beauty, period, and far from hindering it, age can often enrich it.

If it's bad to be romantically involved with someone who is old enough to be the parent of a child who is your own age, then where is all the shit-talking about women who hook up with men old enough to have daughters their age?

Or is this instead simply some sort of overcompensation-driven rejection of relationships which could be perceived as Oedipal?

(Anonymous) 2008-09-23 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
oh believe me, i think 50 year old men going after 20 year old girls is gross too.

probably oedipal lol. daddy/mommy issues.

[identity profile] box-in-the-box.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Because, of course, there's no possibility that, as a result of their respective life experiences and personalities, two people with a significant age difference between them could simply be attracted to one another as a result of who they are, and how well they click together.

I'm so glad that we all have you here to tell us which relationships between mutually consenting adults are and aren't appropriate.

(Anonymous) 2008-09-24 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
don't you have an 80 year old to suck off?

[identity profile] box-in-the-box.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm sorry, my mistake; I thought you might actually be capable of not being a complete and total idiot.

(Anonymous) 2008-09-23 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
ps - i didn't say she WAS her mother, just that she's old enough to be.

[identity profile] box-in-the-box.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 12:19 am (UTC)(link)

Your capacity to be completely and totally wrong is astonishing.

This is what you said: (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomsecrets/201042.html?thread=82773586#t82773586)

"[...] who could easily -be- their mother [...]"

Do yourself a favor and quit while you're behind.

(Anonymous) 2008-09-24 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
so I worded it wrong. :O WOW IT HAPPENS!!

the world is now imploding because i made a mistake, oh no

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2008-09-25 12:40 am (UTC)(link)

Yeess. To, "But they're old enough to be your [mother/father]!" I like to say, "But crucially, [he/she]'s not." Best said in a very crisp tone.

And? People close to your own age could just as easily be a sibling, or cousin, or other too-close-for-sexytimes relative.

Re: 103.

[identity profile] t3h-toby-chan.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I think the general social expectation is that people should associate people a generation older than themselves with their parents, and thus if they are attracted to an older person, it is assumed that they must see their own parents as attractive by association. Vice a versa with people who are attracted to younger adults of a generation that could be the same as their own offspring.

I've been looked at weirdly for discussing dating prospects with individuals no more than nine years older than myself. I've heard people froth and spit about pairings I like by yelling "She's old enough to be his mother!" to which I can only reply, "Sure, if she was ten years old when she gave birth to him." Some people are really squicked by very small age difference, and it seems to be a fairly recent social construct. God knows how weird it would be if the age gap were more than that.

(And yet weirdly, all the teen girls swooning over Johnny Depp go by without comment)
