This is probably the reason why I still haven't felt motivated enough to check out Sense8.

I know what OP means, especially in YA lit, but Sense8 is...not this. It's not a perfect show but everyone has a personality and a reason for being in the story.

I don't know anything about the show and didn't mean to imply I think it's bad. It's just, like the secret said, I almost never hear about the amazing plot or this cool character. Everything is about how progressive it is, which, weirdly, makes watching it sound like homework.

Fair. It is pretty weak on the plot, but the characterization and cinematography are really good.

Except Lito's storyline imo. And Sun and the guy in Africa, their crossovers were awesome. I would have watched Sun's storyline as a separate show.

Thiiiiisss.

"The guy in Africa" is Capheus, and he's specifically from Kenya. He also has, like, a HUGE story arc in season 2, so it kinda chafes that you don't know his name/didn't bother to google it

Definitely give Sense8 a chance, it's really fun, beautiful, and with some incredible characters and performances.

My theory: people who only praise Sense8's progressive cast actually mean, "My favorite thing is the m/m, f/f, m/m/f, m/m/m/m/f/f/f/f, etc. sex scenes," but they don't want to say that.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-07 11:01 am (UTC)(link)
That was my favorite thing. Second was the scenery, then the weirdness. But I couldn't bring myself to watch season two. The furor over is cancelation was disappointing. I wish we weren't so needlessly desperate in queer communities.

Same. All I hear is "it's so diverse" and "NO ONE IS STRAIGHT!!!" and there's a ton of sex or something.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I completely agree. Even more so when they try to add in fandom culture garbage, which every time tends to be so cringey...

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeaaaah. Diverse books can still be crap. If you’re trying to sell me on a story and the only thing you can tell me is that it’s diverse and “woke”, that really doesn’t build my confidence that it’s going to be any good.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-06 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. But Tumblr woke points always bang on about how diverse something is over storyline.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel this but with webcomics. So many authors describe their work by listing how many bajillion sexual/gender/ethnic minorities it features but when you actually read it it's just the blandest OC showcase shit where nothing happens.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, this happens so many times.

It kind of depends on the focus of the reviewer? Liz Bourke, Bogi Takacs, GLAAD, and The Unicorn Scale often do LGBTQ-focused reviews, but that's far from the only review out there.
