I'm having a hard time reconciling the examples you give in this secret (examples of bad stuff) with your assessment of the author as a good author.

Good prose isn't the same thing as good storytelling, though, and can whitewash any number of flaws. And when combined with worldbuilding, you can get a series of "well, that makes sense -in context-" that get progressively further from the source until it's unrecognizable.

The problem with fanfic is that the bar is nonexistent, so readers will frequently go 'good prose' therefore 'good writer' therefore 'good storyteller' therefore 'good story' even when everything except the prose is objectively arse.
