Re: shopping for a new fandom

What was the Magicians clusterfuck? I've heard of it but I haven't been able to glean what actually went down.

Fandom-wise, Umbrella Academy is getting some stellar fic written but if you're not good at blocking out drama you might want to pass on it. Wanky as FUCK. Various series(...es?) of Star Trek still have semi-active fandoms that are generally quite pleasant and discussion-heavy if you're into that, though not quite as much in the way of fic. TNG and DS9 are my picks.

Not in the Magicians fandom but my understanding is two dudes who've been doing the whole 'will they be a couple thing' finally became a couple, then a few episodes later one of them was killed off because the writer's 'didn't know where else to take his story'.

Cue fandom uproar.

Add to that: the character they killed was also the main character from the book, and canonically dealt with depression and anxiety and the writers decided to kill him off the show via suicide, then the writers said something along the lines of how death is a great gift we can give loved ones.

Basically Kill the Gays and Tragic Beautiful Suicide tropes just shoved in with zero warning and horribly written.

At least that's what's been on my dash.

Well. Thank you for letting me know not to bother. I feel sorry for the book fans. That is a brutal thing to do to a character people are attached to.

WOW, BIG YUCK. I'm not incensed enough to dive further into the fandom drama, but wow is that a gross way of looking at suicide (and I say that as someone who's contemplated it in the past).

And now I'm taking this show off my to-watch someday list.

1. It wasn't suicide.
2. The show is absolutely fucking awful to the Het characters too. I'm not crying tears here. I mean, it's not like Q died painfully, and pointlessly, of magical cancer. Or found that a season-long spiritual quest ended in him getting raped in a puddle of his friends' blood. No. He got hot chocolate. He got an assurance that his friends loved him and a ticket right to the afterlife. He's gonna be okay.

Oh, fuck, that's bad. Eesh. I don't blame people for being upset about that, honestly.

they also filmed multiple versions of the season finale and kept all the actors, bar the guy who was getting killed off, in the dark about the character's death to the extent that some of the actors actually REASSURED fans of the show that the two dudes were going to meet again, only for it turn out that no. that doesn't happen.

he dies and they never share two words to each other before that point.

... this whole thing has been something else.

[but then this show was never good at lgbt characters, it's killed off plenty before, but this time i guess we were all hoping it'd be different? but it wasn't and idk about others but i feel really stupid for trusting them again after all the shit they've pulled]

I hadn't heard about the filming multiple versions things. That explains some of the actor reactions. Tbf to them, the cast all seem as gutted as the fandom was.

sa.

oh it's not the casts fault at all and i didn't mean to imply otherwise, i really feel sorry for them bc they were out that being reassuring in completely good faith, only to have this fall on their heads.

this is all on the showrunners+writers.

ayrt

oh no, I didn't meant that you implied anything about the cast! Just a general observation that it wasn't the fandom overreacting like fandom can. This was legit shitty decision making on the writers/showrunners parts.

it's okay, i just wanted to make sure just in case there was any confusion. bc they don't deserve any hate for what went down bc they didn't even know.

yeah fandom can be very... fandom about ships, but in this instance we really were completely dicked around, given false hope, like i said: i just feel so stupid bc i know this shows history but i let myself believe this time would be better. but they weren't. more fool me.

Just a heads up, as it can get confusing in conversations. You are not SA. SA means same anon replying to themselves, like they had a typo they wanted to clarify or another thought to add. You are AYRT, or anon you are replying to, meaning your comment is above theirs.

:/

There really is a point where it feels malicious, isn't there? Like, this feels like they honestly hate lgbt people.

it really just feels... rotten y'know? and given this show's part-history i just can't most past this shit anymore. i kept doing it, i kept playing myself and i'm done.

it's clear they don't care about my views, so they won't get mine anymore.
