I know what you mean, I remember reading several fics like this - it was all well-plotted and gripping, but all female characters were sidelined or in one case, just did not appear in the fic at all, although their canon relations with other characters would suggest they should be at least mentioned. It was so strange. I had fun reading those fics, but I also felt that somethingw as vaguely off about the whole thing.
