I feel the same way. I think Steve was trying to get comfortable in the 21st century but it was still a work in progress and he hadn't made it as far as he acted like he did. The came the snap and things went to shit.

I think it's all open to interpretaion how honest Steve was being about moving on (honest with himself, included) but I'm willing to interpret it this way.

I agree with both of you, same here. And if he knew the importance of how he was discussed before, then he and Peggy probably had to resolve to be sure that happened in his new future, he just probably laid low in the past. At least, that's how I see it.
