But how much of that is because we just don't really criticize male celebrities for anything at all short of decades' worth of physical or sexual abuse?

This.

AYRT maybe i'very missed something. What is she being criticised for??

Last I heard people were mad at her because her Japanese tattoo was ~cultural appropriation~. Funny thing is I actually learned about this controversy from Japanese people on my Twitter TL facepalming at white people and saying that they were okay with the tattoo, that it wasn't cultural appropriation.

Why is it so funny to me when people who very obviously have never bothered to inform themselves try to educate others? You could have scrolled by, but you thought to yourself - I've got this bit of half-knowledge, I'll be damned if I don't share it.

Uhm, anon wanted to know what was going on with this chick, I knew there was some drama regarding her tattoo some months ago, and I shared the info. That's all. Calm your tits, there's no reason to overreact.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is it do funny to you that you think it's ok to be extremely rude for no reason?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually didn't see anyone call that cultural appropriation, just really fucking stupid and somewhat disrespectful. Like, go ahead and get as many "charcoal barbecue" tattoos as you like, hon, but it's never gonna be anything but embarrassing.

Huh. Okay. I'm never sure how to feel when celebs get roasted about stuff like this. It doesn’t reflect well on them but it also doesn't reflect well on celebrity culture either imo. People analysing and obsessing about every single thing someone does. Don't people have lives to live?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
AFAIK, there's a lot of niggling cultural appropriation things that aren't necessarily damning but are sort of... iffy. Also, there was a thing where she reacted really, really harshly to people writing critical reviews of her album, which I don't think is a good look, personally.

I must be getting old.

Gettings tats of words in a different language is considered iffy these days?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
...that’s not why she’s accused of cultural appropriation? she’s not accused of appropriating Japanese culture at all. Her tattoo is just dumb and stupid. It’s black culture she’s accused of appropriating.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Back in my day it was considered hilarious in that lots of white people got kanji tattoos that they insisted meant things like 'spirit' and 'honor' and actually meant things like 'left' and 'books'. Most Japanese people I know still think it's funny, instead of offensive. But a bunch of Americans decided it's appropriation, so....

Brownface and appropriating AAVE to be trendy mostly. She’s a culture vulture. And I say this as someone who likes her music Ariana is messy as fuck.

+1 Yeeeeeeeep.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
And even then, they get away with it and even get fucking standing ovations (looking at you, Louis CK and Woody Allen).
