Ariana Grande is Italian

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
And? Italians aren’t white. She also tans/bronzes herself at least 4 shades darker than she actually is and is actually pale as hell.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Same anon. I meant Italians are white. D’oh.

Italians were considered white only relatively recently. They crossed the "they're white" threshold in cities where they had a major presence sometime in the late 40s. In areas of the country where they weren't so numerous, it was more like the 60s.

Hell, my dad was in Texas in the early 60s when he was in the air force and was informed that he wouldn't be served in a restaurant because he wasn't "white." He was hella shocked at that little piece of information.

Which only goes to show what a fucked up social construct "white" really is. It's just a mechanism to bestow certain privileges on people who are considered part of the club by virtue of the color of their skin.

It’s 2019. She was born long past a time where Italians were already considered white. What is your point? She retroactively has POC status now even though she is benefiting from white privilege? I guess all those girls at Coachella who are 1/12th Cherokee aren’t racist either when they wear Native American head dresses.

You completely missed my point.

Yes. It's 2019. She's considered white in the U.S. I'm pointing out that whiteness itself is a stupid construct to grant privilege to people in the club. Whiteness is a white supremacist construct.

Then why did you reply to the point that I said Ariana is white? Her being Italian has nothing to do with being white. She is white which is what the whole criticism is. She’s white and appropriating a culture that is not her and you chime in with she’s Italian as if that absolves her of her whiteness and hen had the gal to go “well ACTUALLY” when I pointed out her being Italian doesn’t make her not white.

I love how not using sunblock is cultural appropriation now. It doesn't trivialize actual real life issues at all.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
The argument is not just based on her skin being dark

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
ah yes. Because AAVE is a cornorstone of Italian culture that’s why it’s called African American Venacular English and she doesn’t bronze her skin so dark to benefit from that ethinic ambiguity when she is as white as Miley Cyrus. Oh wait.
