His character is fully entrenched in the abuse he suffered at the hand of his Muggle father and the influence of his pureblood mother who clung even harder to her magical background in the face of said abuse. He crafted the identity of the Halfblood Prince specifically to emphasize his magical roots. Falling in with the wrong crowd is the tragic consequence of these traits, not the cause of them.
