I had soooooooo much fun!! :D

I spotted the 'twist' pretty early, but that didn't make it less fun, or the final resolution of everything less satisfying.

Mewtwo's voice was neat, I liked that a lot. All the Pokemon were criminally adorable, and I really liked the fight-club scene, probably because of the music.

And speaking of the music I heard the Pokemon theme and the battle music theme a few times across the movie as well and it made me smile like a loon every time I heard them.

Some reviews I watched commented that the movie was really weird, so I was anticipating a very strange adventure, but I came out of it feeling like it was on brand. Maybe because I grew up watching Pokemon episodes from time to time and had a lot of family and friends who were really into it so I was more prepared for the weird Pokemon stuff? Either way, I had a GREAT time watching it. The Pokemon are so cute (obviously, especially Pikachu; although Bulbasaur has always been my favorite and I teared up just the tiniest bit when all those Bulbasaurs were leading Tim to Mewtwo). Ken Watanabe is great in everything I see him in. I loved Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu but I did at times think, "I would have loved to have had Danny Devito's voice coming out of Pikachu's mouth here."

I think their "twist" would have been even more obvious from the start had they cast Devito and his distinctive silhouette.

That would have been hilarious IMO. But I'm glad Ryan Reynolds voiced Pikachu. His performance was great.

I didn't even call the twist. Was too distracted by FUCKING POKEMON! to even make the connection, so I legit went blurry eyed when Ryan Reynolds appeared. I thought it was an adorable movie. The main plot was kinda meh and could've used more development (though in fairness, the Pokemon body swapping stuff is straight from the games) but I really liked Tim as a protagonist and his rapport with Pikachu, and seeing their bond grow.

I loved it - I thought the performances from Justice Smith and Ryan Reynolds were really good, and the plot was fun and felt very classic Pokemon. The plot was predictable but that didn’t really bother me - I still liked the story and characters and had a great time.

The only story thing that confused me was - why did the villain want to make everyone into Pokémon? I get why he wants to be Mewtwo, but why swap the whole city?

Yeah, that confused me, too. I get the wanting to put himself into a Pokemon (a la Bill from Red/Blue) because he can't walk. If that Pokemon is fucking Mewtwo, all the better. But why everybody else? Did he really love the Pokemon/Human companionship of Rhyme City so much he wanted to smoosh them, or was it just "hey no one can blame ME for possessing a pokemon if ALL Y'ALL are possessing pokemon!" There just didn't seem to be any explained reason for it, not even a crazy villain reason.

My interpretation of it is that he believed that by placing the humans into their Pokemon companion they can evolve into better beings. Rhyme City would have human/Pokemon hybrids that takes humanity to the next evolution. Another move to play God.

I think because he saw it as becoming better and had convinced himself that it was for the good of the future.

If you noticed, he had some interesting statues in his office: Arceus, Dialga and Palkia, all in gold. Basically the gods of the Pokeverse. He wanted to, in the end, share this new evolution with everyone. He didn't see it as morally wrong or anything, but just the next step in human evolution.
