Still mad about the whole Black Widow freaking out about not having kids.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
that's not what that scene was about at all but okay

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's absolutely no one but Joss Whedon's fault that it's by far and away the most obvious and intuitive surface level reading of the scene, though

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
It was really out of character considering the circumstances.

I liked that season, and the way Warren got fed up all his elaborate plans didn't work so he just straight up walked up to Buffy with a gun. Even that he shot Tara, since even he felt bad about killing the most innocent one of the group.

I don't think killing a female character to provide a plot arc for another female character rather than a male one fits the traditional definition of "fridging."

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, and Willow is also gay.

Just like in Torchwood when Ianto got killed and fans whined that he was fridged. Okay, three of five main characters died, two of them were pretty much straight, and another pansexual main character lived.

I get being tired of tragic endings for LGBT couples, but characters die, and you can't make people untouchable for this reason.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think you can notice and complain about the overall pattern, both in general with LGTB couples and with women in Whedon's work, without saying that no gay character can ever die.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but Buffy seems like a bad example when it's practically Korean drama levels of 'everyone dies'. Sometimes more than once.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
There's also the fact that Tara was a well-realized character in her own right who had been on the show for a while, and not just a throwaway love-interest for Willow whose only purpose was to die for drama.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT - Seconding this because it's important.

Also, in Firefly Wash dies in a similarly sudden and devastating fashion, so I really don't buy the argument that this is some kind of Joss-ian trend that reflects badly on him as a person or a feminist. He just has a thing for killing characters who seem like they should be too kind and too beloved to suffer such a senseless fate.

*I meant Serenity, not Firefly.

While i still enjoy most of Buffy/Angel/Firefly, I pretty much just feel like 'fuck you, Whedon' most of the time.

As with most things, fandom makes it better.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
People on Buffy die all the time. Why would Tara be special?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously? Why was this considered fridging any more than any other death in the series?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
Thirding this.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
TBH I don't get why Tara's death (as senseless as it was, story-wise, and mean as it was out of universe with the whole credit thing to make fans think she had been promoted to regular character), is considered the breaking point when he later went on to create "Prostitute will be raped endlessly but it's ok because her vagina is deadly" (Even if Fox's meddling made sure THAT scene was never filmed) and "Rape: The Series"
