I've always bled lightly, which became very, very lightly once I went on birth control. So I'm definitely not the norm. But personally, even on my heavy days, one tampon would last me all day if it weren't for fear of toxic shock syndrome. One heavy-flow pad would also last me all day on a heavy day, but I never buy heavy-flow pads. I only ever use ultra-light pads for the last day where I'm basically just spotting and don't want to ruin my underwear.

The only time I've ever gushed blood was pre-birth control, when I went to the bathroom first thing after getting up in the morning, and my period had started during the night.
