Oh man, I feel like this is one of those things where RL and fandom are the reverse of each other. Like, when you ship anything non-canonical, most non-fannish people (NFPs) think that's kinda weird, but fandom folk are like, "Yeah, no shit, everybody ships that." Whereas my experience has been that most NFPs think shipping canonical pairings is super normal, and like, yeah, of course you ship that, you're meant to. Whereas it's the canon pairings that fandom tends to be derisive of.
