This might be my own headcanon, but I'd like to think the questions would skew easier/harder depending on how old the student was. Luna and Harry were 16/17, but maybe a 1st year would get something like "What is the best Hogwarts House?" and they'd say "Ravenclaw rules!" and they'd get in.

Why they couldn't just teach the portraits to memorize the people in their House, I don't know. I guess passwords are cooler.
