What is the worst thing you've ever eaten at a restaurant?

Half-cooked tilapia that didn't come with the avocado the menu had promised, after nearly 2 hours of waiting.

A few weeks ago I was out to dinner with my parents, and my dad offered me something on his fork. Him: "try this!" Me: "what is it?" Him: "you'll like it!" Me: *slightly dubious but eats the thing*

First there was the gritty texture, like I had bitten into a small pouch of sand. Then came the taste - sickly sweet, with sharp undertones, like some sort of liqueur custom designed for me to hate. I gagged, downed my glass of water, refilled it, downed it again, then gave up and drank straight from the bottle until it was empty and the worst of the taste had been washed from my mouth.

Meanwhile, there was this exchange between my parents - Mum: "what was that?" Dad: "a fig!" Mum: "she hates figs! You know she hates figs!" Dad: "oh."

Then the waitress brought us a new bottle of water, and nothing more was said about it.

LOL... did your Dad genuinely forget you hated figs, or was he trying to pull one over on you?

If someone tells me "You'll like it!" without answering my very reasonable question of "What is it?" I get suspicious. Because either they think I'm close minded about food (which I'm not) or they know for damn sure there's a reason why I wouldn't like it.

I think he forgot, but he HAS tried to slip me foods he knows I hate in the past, so I can't say for certain.

I ate a pizza in Italy that tasted like foot.

Everyone with me thought I was exaggerating so they tried some. The consensus was that it did indeed taste like foot, and my friends all just ate foot-tasting pizza for the possibility of getting to tell me I was wrong. Haha.

I'm guessing it was a cheese thing. They have many fantastic cheeses. This wasn't one of them.

Do feet have a distinct taste?

It was like the smell of a sweaty foot that's been in a shoe all day, but I was experiencing it in my mouth.

I love most Italian cheese once but I had one once that tasted like I ate a damn cigarette. I thought I was gonna puke and I had to drink a giant glass of water immediately afterwards.

Pancakes that tasted gross and sour. Everyone else agreed that their tasted gross, plus they dumped a bunch of apricot syrup on them without asking me if I wanted any which I didn't.

French toast that was just regular toast with cinnamon and syrup. The hostess and waitress both recommended it, so that's what I ordered.

Wow, that’s literally a punchline in a stand-up set I heard (something like “we grew up so poor we put aunt jemima’s on a piece of bread and called it ‘coulda-been French toast’)! Sorry, that’s pretty dang terrible...

Some kind of cheese. I'm not sure what it was, but we got a cheese platter with all these fancy cheeses and I ate one that tasted like moldy feet. I downed a whole glass of wine and I could still taste it. So damn horrible.

Gorgonzola, maybe? That shit is rancid, and apparently people love to bake it onto croutons.

Shark fin soup at a friend's bachelorette party. I didn't know it was shark fin until the girl sitting next to me mentioned it. It was like tasting sock water. First and last time. (I also felt kinda bad because I really don't enjoy eating anything that's considered endangered, even if I like fish).

Not gross, just terribly sad: "Parisian breakfast" in a Parisian café. Hot chocolate from the industrial insta coffee machine, "complete toast" that was two meagre over-toasted slices of industrial cardboard white bread, industrial unsalted butter, industrial bland apricot jam. And that was it. Bland, unsatisfying, and terribly over-priced.
