Oh man, for us it was blue Shockers. (It had to be the blue ones, those were the sourest.) A group of us would each buy a bag and open them all at once, sort out all the blue ones, then basically play tournament rock-paper-scissors to see who the unfortunate asshole was that had to cram them into their mouth, haha. To the day I have an instinctive twinge of dread if I actually win a round of rock-paper-scissors!

Maybe an oxymoron, but good nu-metal

I just saw a couple of kids playing this yesterday! It warmed my heart. I'm glad that no matter how old I get, some things seem to stay universal.

"Illegal" as in banned at school.

Oh okay that makes more sense. I was worried this was like Kinder Eggs all over again or something, lol.

Schools didn't allow them because they were too distracting. Kids would trade them in class.

Also kids would steal them, or get ripped off in trades, and it would cause a bunch of commotion. Good times.

Digimon and Tamagotchi keychains.

Also TGIF programming. Friday nights were the best for TV.

Clapping games. Like crocadilly or whatever one called it. At camp we played a variant where the number 10 player had a chance to not lose; the count would go "...five, six, seven, eight, niiiiiiiiiine..." and people would drag it out as the ninth person faked the slap a few times and the tenth pulled away a few times, and then if #10 pulled away exactly as #9 performed the actual slap and thus slapped their own hand, #9 was out instead. It was probably a weird house rule I've never heard of anyone else doing, and it was some good-ass shit.

We also substituted some of the lyrics with "stick your butt in jello, your pants are turning yellow". Yeah. We were eight. Shut up.

I was just trying to remember some clapping games at work. I had "Have you ever ever ever in your long-legged life" stuck in my head.

Making up stupid ghost stories and myths and little BS stories that we all knew were BS

Syndicated cartoons and afternoon cartoon blocks on non-cable TV. When I was a kid those afternoon blocks like the Disney Afternoon were a once a day chance to watch shows you loved, now you can just watch stuff on cable that gets constantly rerun all day (and that's assuming you have cable) or just stream whatever you want, it's not the same.

Playing Cat's Cradle. I bet if I had the cord right now, my hands would make those patterns by muscle memory alone.

I miss when cap gun tape and firecrackers were legal.
Small amounts of gunpowder available to anyone with spare change.
(And no, we didn't set the neighborhood on fire...)

Are they illegal now? I worked in a toy shop in the late 90s/early 00s and we sold a TON of those things!

In Massachusetts, firecrackers and cap gun tape have been legal and/or banned off and on so damned often, I've lost track of what the relevant laws have to say this time around.
