Yeah, Aeris seriously got slaughtered - Sephiroth did it once, Nomura did it again. :-/ The whole point of Aeris in the original was that she was so full of life. She was so alive, so funny, so mischievous. Not some distant angelic Madonna. Sure, she had her mysterious side, but she had so many human struggles and her own personal goals and dreams.

Cloud's changes also make me so sad. Like, I get you can justify his character change with post-war trauma, etc. But his whole character arc was coming to terms with who he was in the game. By the finale, he's smiling again. It's so moving that it's unsatisfying to see him not only backtrack, but get more distant than he ever was in the game.

But it's also the whole world that just feels changed. The original FF7 wasn't a scifi... it was a grungy 90's cyberpunk. Plus, I'm frustrated with how they've handled the Lifestream stuff in the spin-offs. The most spiritually beautiful parts of the game, and suddenly they have Zack's ghost stealing the spotlight in AC? Wtf.

I don't know if it was ever confirmed by character designers or creators, but I feel like Tifa and Aeris' designs and personalities were meant to be subversive. Like they made Aeris look like the soft, innocent, shy waif of the two, when she's actually rather flirty, sly, outgoing, and sometimes even mean. Meanwhile, Tifa looks like she should be the confident and outgoing tomboy, but she's actually rather shy and demure in personality. And now they've fucked it all up by playing Aeris entirely straight :/

Oh for sure, I'm confident the Aeris/Tifa thing was intentional. Tifa's got her tough moments but at least around Cloud she tends to be a little shyer, almost meek. Whereas Aeris stomps right in like she don't give a fuck.
