Are you kidding? There's is a notable difference in storytelling between the old Squaresoft games (FFVII) and the Square Enix games (from FFX). The older games are funnier and more cohesive in terms of plot, for one. The original FFVII had a diverse cast in terms of personality and demographics within the world. It had charm and optimism and fun banter.

Saying this as someone who has played all the FF games and is still a fan of newer ones, VII had charm to it that Square Enix seriously lacks on its games. Their direction is generally Rule of Cool and adhering to a very specific visual style that the original game didn't really represent.
