Trailers vs. Actual Movie

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
What awesome movies had terrible trailers that made them look worse than they really were?

What terrible movies had awesome trailers that made them look better than they really were?

Have you ever watched a trailer that seemed like it was cut from a totally different movie than it was for?

Suicide squad.

This one, for sure. I never thought it was going to be amazing but it looked like it was going to be a lot of fun. Alas.

Not so much bad but misleading: a trailer I watched for In Bruges made it seem like a maybe slightly darker but overall entertaining comedy. So I did not expect it to be as black and gory as it was.

It's a black comedy....

No shit Sherlock. The thread was about trailers vs. movies though. And even in a black comedy, there's not necessarily an abundance of gore.

The word you're looking for is "Pitch"

Does misleading trailers count? Because Pitch Black is a really solid, fun sci-fi movie but the trailers made it look like it was All Horror-All the Time... and it was not. I still really like it but I felt a little betrayed by the marketing there.

For shit movies with good trailers:

Suicide Squad, well it looked like it was a lot more fun at any rate.

Godzilla 2014, lord some of those shots in the trailer, holy shit. Too bad the rest of it was fucking terrible.

I feel like I'm the only person who likes the entire Pitch Black trilogy. All of it. And the weird middle one is my favorite.

I like them too!

Like sure The Chronicles of Riddick is a weird af movie, but it's also really fun? And the Aesthetic of the bad-guys is fucking amazing. Like yes, pls give me more of everyone wearing stupid Hot Goth armor.

Yup. Weird, fun, and a really interesting aesthetic.

Not sure on the first.

For the second and third... Beowulf. Looked great from the trailer... then I was like "what the fuck did I watch?" In 3D.

Oh shit, I am drawing a blank, hold on I need to IMDB.

{TWO HOURS LATER}

Apparently I also spent the whole movie thinking Anna Hathaway was Zooey Deschanel so that made it harder to find but... Colossal.

Trailer was all, "Heee, look at this cutesy movie!" when in reality it was like, "Hey so we're going to punch you in the face with feelings. Then knee you in the groin. Then mace you while you're down."

I haven't been so upset at a movie since Pan's Labyrinth.

Ha, Colossal. I thought it was going to be goofy because of the premise, but then it's so full of upsetting and serious themes.

Idk if it counts, but the opening to Death Parade is absolutely the most charming, happy party jam with an incredibly feel-good montage of the characters dancing and being cute-- and then the series itself is brutally upsetting, at times cruel, existentially depressing and violent. It's such whiplash!

I didn't hate Watchmen but the trailer was kinda better?

I thought Deadool looked so obnoxious from the trailer and it mostly wasn't.

Yeah Deadpool's the one I was tthinking of. All the promo stuff was way more OTT than the actual movie. (Which is good, bc I loved the movie and I wouldn't have if it was full tilt hyper dudebro jokes the whole time.)

This is weird because it's old, but for some reason the only thing that's coming to mind is Without A Paddle. The trailer made it look stupid as hell, but I thought it was actually pretty good. Not a masterpiece or anything, but much better than I expected based on the trailer.

I thought the trailer for Alita was fucking horrible, but the movie was pretty fun.

The cinematic trailer for Assassin's Creed: Revelations is fucking awesome. The game didn't really live up to it.

Oh, I did too! But compared to AC1 or the other Ezio games, it had a lot of problems.

It was a buggy mess, and the combat and free-running was a major step down from ACB (mostly I think due to trying to introduce too many conflicting systems on a minimal control scheme). And while I loved some elements of the story, there were others that didn't live up to some of the earlier games. It was really clear they were trying to make AC more commercial or more Hollywood or something, with some of the writing choices and how some things were presented. The soundtrack as well is super generic Hollywoodish, and as much as I love it, it lacks the depth and the unique vibe that Jesper Kyd's OSTs had.

Brave

The trailer made it look like some mom and daughter team up adventure which I was TOTALLY down for.

The movie was... utter trash.
