Um, no. Dude. I'm 28 and a literature PhD. I have read more widely than everyone I've met outside academia. I agree that Twilight sucks. I have no desire to read the other two series up there so can't say if they're any good because I won't pass judgment on anything I haven't read. (The fact that I don't want to read them does mean I think they look bad.)

BUT. There is also a lot of YA out there that's good. There's a lot of interesting things going on in YA. Wicked Lovely was a terribly good book, and I'd like to force everyone who read Twilight to read Wicked Lovely as an example of doing it *right*. Scott Westerfield, Tamora Pierce, and Dianna Wynne Jones are all *brilliant* contemporary YA authors.

Out of curiosity, what literature do you think is good?

I was coming in to say pretty much the same thing (except without the PhD). A lot of things are crap, why pick on YA lit?

First: icon love (for the second time, haha).
Second: Word! So much word! I was actually gonna comment and say something abut Westerfeld and the other brilliant YA authors I've read...but you did it much more eloquently than I could have. So, yeah, Word!

Yes, thank you. Most, if not all, of my favorite books are YA, and I'm 22. (Still technically a young adult I guess...) But man, I'm so glad that other people recognize how glorious the YA section can be.

Oh, I agree with this so hard. I still go back and reread my Diana Wynne Jones books sometimes. Howl's Moving Castle and The Chrestomanci Quartet basically helped shape me as a person. ♥

Wicked Lovely was horribly clichéd. The characters were 2-dimensional at best and Aislinn was bland downright unsympathetic (which she wasn't supposed to be). The Seth character was Marr's idea of the perfect guy and he was even flatter than fucking Edward Cullen. And I've never seen an author trying so hard to be edgy, hip and contemporary. (Yes, I've read Cassandra Clare and Holly Black's stuff.) It's hilarious because by the time I read the book all her cool, edgy music choices were already incredibly outdated.

It was really a faerie tale for the Hot Topic generation.

But Marr did provide some laughs when she made Seth's big romantic gesture his STD tests. What happened to flowers or even sparkling in the sun?

You mean YA? I really like Joyce Carol Oates' YA stuff (not as good as her adult stuff but still yes! fully realized three-dimensional characters. Acting realistically! Hooray!) And I like Wynne Jones' Dogsbody and Howl's Moving Castle. I think I would have liked her Fire and Hemlock but it skeeved me out with the Uncle pairing.
