#101: Echoing an earlier comment, "I have a hard time feeling bad that you're outnumbered in fandom when people like you have been ruling America (and fucking it up nicely) for eight years." Sux2BUbro. But I'm sure there are other conservatives out there on the internet. Have you tried "the Google"?

#149: I love this show but don't get the fandom at all. Most people hated her? Seriously? Why? :[ I liked her a lot and was sad when she died.

I totally agree. There seems to be so much character bashing for no apparent reason, based on "facts" that I swear I have never seen in the show....it's weird. (Like, don't get me started on the -- to me, inexplicable -- Helo hatred that's rampant.)

But, yeah. Poor Cally -- I'm bummed that she isn't around anymore.

People hate Helo? See, that just breaks my brain. He is one of the only characters I have liked consistently throughout the course of the show. He's just so... good. I'm not attracted to him sexually but I think he's probably the person with the best quality of character and strongest morals on the entire show and I admire him a lot.

I know, right?! Madness! I fucking love Helo; he's probably my favorite character in the bunch in terms of people I'd actually like to know in real life.

People bitch that he's self-righteous and sanctimonious. Are there episodes I've missed or something? I don't recall one single instance of sanctimony. I have no idea where that comes from. He hasn't done anything (taking moral stands, etc.) that any other character hasn't done, and yet people don't like him. This is where I say, "Y'all are crazy" and step away. Which probably makes me crazy in my own way, but there you go. :)

I think the moral stands Helo takes are generally unpopular with the other characters on the show, which in turn makes them unpopular with the fans who love those characters. Him marrying a Cylon and giving her a chance to live her life the way she wanted, him arguing against the humans being the hugest hypocrites ever by wiping out the Cylons with biological weapons (ironically that episode is where I started to slide into temporarily disliking Roslin), standing up for fair medical and ethical treatment for all the humans (even the politically unpopular ones) at the cost of his own reputation... etc, etc.

The whole thing reminds me of this song "Aletheuo" by DJ Krush; "We don't think before we speak / We don't stand up for the weak / And we don't listen to the freaks / We don't clean up our own shit / And when refused we throw a fit / Screaming I don't want to hear it".

^Sums up so much of what is screwed up with the humans in real life on the show, and Helo avoids that trap.

It's not just that the fandom hated her. Some dude on TWOP hated her, so everyone followed him like sheep. And then there's the fact that Tyrol's rant about her is pretty much word for word what TWOP dude said, and the writer of that episode is a fan of his, and--

Huh. There are seriously like two TV shows that I like and I'm newish to the BSG fandom, so all this is still sort of mysterious to me :p

Oh, you're kidding. You're talking about Jacob, right? I cringed so badly during that speech because it came out of nowhere (except maybe some grief-fueled temporary psychosis), and I couldn't believe the Chief really meant any of it, and here it is, all Jacob's doing? Goddamnit.

Well. I've no conclusive proof, but given that speech is damned near some of the things Jacob's said, I wouldn't put it past the writer borrowing it, because it sounded good.

I like to pretend that speech didn't happen, otherwise, I just want to shoot Chief in the head. There were far easier ways to get demoted.

I never understood the Cally hate, myself. I'm not very involved in the fandom, so I was mostly only vaguely aware of it. But on the few occasions that I ventured onto messageboards or LJ discussions, it always seemed to be there at least peripherally. Apparently some people disliked her because she (according to them) whined a lot? Aside from one or two occasions I don't really recall her being hugely whiny, but I suppose different people are annoyed by different things. (Besides which, if I had been in her position? I probably would be whining nonstop, too!)
