[Image: the CD covers for the Frank Wildhorn musical adaptations of "Dracula" and "The Count of Monte Cristo"]

Text: I hate the fact that Frank Wildhorn's musicals tend to change the endings or meanings of the stories he adapts...

...but I really like the music and lyrics.

Dang you Wildhorn for being such a good composer!

Pictured: Two of the most egregious examples.

I like Gankutsuou, so I don’t really have grounds to complain about changing the ending of The Count of Monte Cristo. Besides, “The Man I Used to Be” understands the truly important part of the Count in ways most imitators never grasp.

What did he to do "Dracula"?

He was hardly the only one to make the change, but having Dracula be romantically interested in Mina (or maybe Lucy and Mina?) and vice-versa, instead of their being motivation for the vampire hunters to kill him (and in Mina’s case, helping the hunters.)

Honestly I think it would be easier to count the number of adaptions that didn't go that route. I wish more adaptions didn't do that and stuck to the idea of the original.

Given that Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favorite stories and I like to see every version, I really need to find a copy of this.

Good luck finding an English version; you can buy some of the songs off I-tunes, but I don't think there are any recordings of the English productions. There is a German production with English subtitles on Youtube, though!

I still have a major soft spot for him because Jekyll and Hyde was my first favourite musical back in high school. Loved Scarlet Pimpernel too!
Only mildly salty because he married my favourite Takarazuka actress but Takachan seems happy so it’s all good.
