I'm ambivalent to him on the whole, but the few clips I've seen of him as the Genie are just... so flat and bad, I'm not sure I could actually sit through it. "Prince Ali" was garbage, (why was he autotuned?? why was the choreography so boring??) and that was always one of my favorite moments from the original, so it just kind of set the tone for how I'm probably going to feel about it.

I think a live action Genie is a bad idea no matter who is cast, he's a character who's full potential, and impact is impossible to replicate in a live action setting. I hear there are stage musicals based on Aladdin, and I can't even begin to imagine how they pull it off.

Idk, I think that's letting Hollywood off too lightly. Have you ever watched a Bollywood film? They quite often reach that level of bombastic near-cartoonishness in live action, and a Bollywood feel would have been perfect for the Prince Ali number.

As for the stage musicals: they get around the lack of effects and such simply by hamming up the performance to incredible levels. Teetering on the edge of flamboyant. Just... big, big, big sound, big motions, big choreography. All of which was missing in this new movie version, which makes me sad. It is doable!
