If that's what they were going for, then I fundamentally don't believe that they did enough to sell it. At least not for me. And clearly I'm not alone considering how divisive the final is and how many fans didn't like it. If it worked for you, great. It didn't work for me.

Then again, I might be giving the writers more credit than they deserve; they could have made Jaime run back to Cersei because it "rhymed" or some other non-sense.

I think Jaime's actions were obvious to me because I'm someone who carries a ton of guilt like he does, and I've given the nature of my guilt and how it affects my life a lot of thought.

Anyway, I'll leave this quote here because I think it explains Jaime's choices better than I ever could:
