So - given a hypothetical choice - you would rather that people evil enough to write and publish the book would exist so that you could read it and gain an understanding of their evil?

People that evil have always existed and always will. Making them all go away is not a realistic option that's on the table. Assuming that people like that exist, yes I would prefer to have their thoughts and ideas out in the open where it's easier to keep an eye on them. Also there's the issue of catharsis - it's very common for people to get their aggressions and bad, taboo thoughts out in their creative work instead of lashing out at real people. Repression is very dangerous, because the steam has to get out somehow.
