Honestly, I assumed the reason they just showed up was because they didn't want to give Tony a chance to avoid them - which he may well have done if he'd been given any warning. Under normal everyday life circumstances, them doing that would be rude. But I think "We might just have a real shot at saving half the universe but we'll need your help to do it" is a circumstance that is kind of exempt from standard social considerations.
