IIRC, Rogers & Hammerstein made things look a lot more cheery-happy-looking than things actually were.

(not saying it was some kind of hellhouse or anything but I'm pretty sure they interviewed some of the kids as adults who pointed out that Julie Andrews Maria von Trapp was not.

It seems that the complications added to make the movie more dramatic never actually happened, so - other than Maria having bad (but quick) temper....
It was actually pretty happy.
