It's interesting because I left fandom and shipping for the best part of a decade. I was extremely busy in my life and tbh quite unhappy, and I didn't see shipping in anything I watched - I didn't have the 'goggles' on. I never thought I would ever write fanfic again. And then, when I was feeling happier in myself, I just started to feel it again, and I was 100% lured back to fandom.

I think that you know inside when you really want to do something. I would say give it a go if you really want to - but, yes, fandom is quite a different place now and - take my advice - ignore the idiots/antis/and so on and simply enjoy what you want to enjoy <3
