Define 'still holds up' LOL.

I was OBSESSED with the last herald mage trilogy in high school. Recent reread tells me they're still fun, engaging stories but they're also terrible at the same time. No regrets.

Big fat agree with that opinion.
Huge doses of wish fulfillment, wangst, semi-formulaic plots, and occasional character descriptions that were kinda overblown. Just like a trashy beach read, but with a little more lore and substance.
