For srs. I never got into DN fandom because of the universal "better-than-thou" feelings. It's just a show. A cool show, one that can make you think about morality if you care about that angle... but it's still just a show.

What does that make the people who read the manga before it got really popular or before we even knew there were going to be movies or an anime series?

Seeing as Toby is supposed to be a mentally challenged grown man in the musical... You'd be right. It's not very good to interpret him as a child, because that totally makes things like the song "Not While I'm Around" a lot creepier than they should be.

Oooh boy, seeing them live in a few months. Didn't realise the fans had so much drama, lulz.

It's funny because in anime gender roles are usually meaningless. Characters, male or female, are just drawn in singular ways to attract determined audiences. Manga like Claymore or Mai-Hime with a completely female cast only feature females to attract the male otaku and the yuri-loving neck-beard crowd. Hell; Motoko Kusanagi, icon of "strong female protagonist", was just drawn as a girl because Shirow wanted to draw plenty of T&A.

The struggle of feminism in Anime/Manga couldn't be more ridiculous.
