Actually, if you read "How To Read 13", it's pretty clear that the writer of the manga is...pretty shocked everyone was taking it so seriously. He says that he was just trying to write something entertaining and wasn't trying to make a statement on good and evil at all.

So basically it's just a case of fans taking the manga a bit too seriously.

I read that and it kind of disappointed me, since there was some potential for it to be serious. But the creator didn't go with that angle so people should just kind of chill. It's fun to think about but people have made Death Note morality into serious biz.

I actually was a little disappointed about it not being as serious as I had thought, too--and I'm not sure how the creator thought people wouldn't take it seriously. At the same time, though, I do like that it gives me a weapon for fans like the OP of 141.

It's a bit relieving to know that at least the author wasn't serious about it... though it's not made very obvious in the manga itself.

Ah well. Death Note could've been an interesting manga, but as far as I'm concerned it lost all potential in the exact moment when Light went "I WILL BE GOD!" After that it became just another shounen manga with a lot more pretension than usual.
