Probably tl;dr, but....
I'm not familiar with this fandom, so obviously, I'm also not familiar with the artist in question, but if they said 'references used', it seems like they acknowledged that they used a photograph for all/part of their drawing.

There seems to be a feeling in fandom that tracing is 'omg bad!' but in actuality, in the 'real' world -- professionally, that is -- graphic artists and illustrators often trace to get their base drawing. That's one of the legitimate uses for copyright-free stock art images. There are even tracing file reference books like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Entourage-Tracing-Architects-Interior-Design/dp/0070089442, for architectural illustrators. Other graphic artists trace, but only from pictures they took themselves. Time is money; why spend hours and hours trying to eyeball figures and hope that you don't screw up the anatomy when you can quickly trace existing figures? And in fandom, where the artist is doing it for free, just for fun, even more so.

Seems like a lot of people in fandom have a tendency to try to view fanart as 'fine art', but some (not all) fanartists approach it more from the viewpoint of an illustrator -- that is, they just want to visually tell a fannish story with fannish characters and if they can accomplish that by starting with a stock image, more power to them. Fanartists that work without reference photos, and that do beautiful work will always be awesome, of course. But for those whose knowledge of anatomy is less than awesome, I'd rather they use reference photos, actually. Makes for better looking artwork, and they may learn something in the process. Tracing bodies in photographs, in a variety of poses, is actually not a bad way to learn some basics of anatomy that can then be strengthened by drawing from life.

As a matter of fact the artist did not state that they used references for most of their pictures - only a few specific ones that were non-stock photos (I'm assuming) of them and their friends. Other pictures had no such "reference" label and when they were praised for their ability to draw proportions, perspective and poses they have never once corrected their admirers.

I have nothing against using references but tracing every line in that photo (for example) down to the pasta and vegetables on the cutting board (not to mention just about every feature of the people aside from their hair) is outrageous. This is made worse by the fact that about all of this artist's work is just sketchy lineart. No coloring and nada effort save for their direct trace.

yes. this is why people get so up in arms when an artist 'traces'. more often than not, they don't even acknowledge they 'had help' and then bask in the praise that they are 'sooooo guuuuud artist' when in fact, they are a fabulous TRACER.

in fact, on of the most popular artists online right now traces from porno mags. I have the images and poses that she directly copies. it's not bad to do so but every one lauds her as god's gift to artistry when she's just good at copying and adjusting to make it suit the fandom.

if you're gonna take credit, take due credit.

Ah, I see your point. The artists I've seen that I'm pretty sure are tracing, still manage to create something original through their coloring, or the addition of other things into the drawing, etc. Often, the source picture they use is only part of a much larger scene. One artist I'm thinking of (an HP artist -- maybe the one someone mentioned earlier because her LJ's been deleted), I always figured she photo-manipped actors' heads onto the figures' bodies and then placed them into a Hogwarts-like setting. The fact that she might have traced it when she was finished composing the scene didn't make me any less impressed with her final product. She did gorgeous, nicely composed drawings of scenes that didn't exist before she put it all together. Sounds like your artist needs to try harder!

As for, 'when they were praised for their ability to draw proportions, perspective and poses they have never once corrected their admirers, that is annoying. It's understandable, given fandom's tendency to freak out about tracing, but still annoying. I know what you're saying, I really do. My own pet peeve is the fakers on Ebay that take a photograph (not even copyright-free photos), run them through some Photoshop filters, print it out on watercolor paper, and try to claim that they 'painted' it.
