The gleeful acceptance that ‘no of course there’s a real percivam Graves, he’s a serious workaholic, hence why Grindlewald could impersonate him so well, but with upstanding moral character, and he’s just waiting to be rescued from his kidnapping’ made this corner of this fandom pleasantly reminiscent of 2011-era XMFC to me.

So, 50% of it is fanon and speculation?

OP

Lol, I meant the character of Percival Graves, but I guess that comes out to 50%.

I've only seen the first movie. Did we ever find out what happened to the real guy or did JK Rowling tweet about it?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
IIRK she said that he literally wasn't a real guy, 100% all Grindelwald. Which makes not a lick of sense, because how else was he meant to have slipped into a position of authority in the government that he appears to have held for years? But then again a lot of what JKR says nowadays doesn't make much sense,

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
that makes... NO fucking sense
at all
what the shit

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! That really doesn't make sense, especially given that it's the wizarding world and everyone knows everyone because they all went to school together. Lol.

I always thought Credence was like fifteen so I never got into personally.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I thought he was 20 or so? The actor was about 24.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
I think he was supposed to be older than that in the script. Def early twenties.

Screenplay introduces them as "Mary Lou's three adopted children, adults Credence and Chastity, and Modesty (an eight-year-old girl)" on pages 13 & 14. It's also a plot point that Credence isn't a child but is miraculously the Obscurial who has somehow managed to survive to adulthood because of his immense power

You think that's bad, I ship original Graves/Newt which is 100% fanon, zero canon. The dynamic made up in fic is so cute and interesting though, I can't resist.

It's fucking annoying Rowling made both Newt and Credence straight in the sequel when they both scream gay and/or asexual. Also that she just...ignored the entire existence of Graves when he was definitely the ensemble darkhorse of the first film and the mystery of what happened to him could still be explored. I think what annoys me most about CoG is that she had so many potentially interesting threads left open after the first movie, but then dropped them all and veered off into the worst, most bizarre, and most contrived directions possible.

I haven't seen the second movie, and I've always been inclined to defend Rowling, but...CREDENCE IS STRAIGHT IN THE SEQUEL?!!! WOW that is some bullshit. As far as I was concerned it was full on canon that Credence was gay, and I say that as someone who doesn't ship him with anyone. I just- that's so- I mean really?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I think I prefer the dynamic of "Newt makes friends with other human beings" to what seems a shoehorned romance in the second movie.

Bisexuality. It fucking exists. Just because he has the hots for a woman now doesn't fucking negate the obvious crush he had.

Also, Newt's always been straight, that's how Luna married one of his descendants.

I really wish they'd kept Collin Farrell for the sequels :(. (I'm not alone at least in this thinking).
