I agree with that. The movie did an overall bad job of portraying her as smart. Even the connection with the defendant and gaining her trust was based on having been in the same sorority. That was dumb luck which doesn't apply to future cases. But I was willing to dismiss it as main character plot luck until that one note soured it all and really unnecessarily so, in a way that didn't even make sense with the plot.

The one thing I do remember is the perm and washing hair knowledge - that was her own knowledge applied in a logical way. That was the only point that showed true competence though.

And yeah, the movie came out 18 years ago. But it was recced on FS as a fun movie a few weeks back. Not exactly what I was expecting.

And see, that part bothered me. I get what they were trying to do, but she decides that's the one point to aggressively pursue? How convenient, to unravel an entire case over a single slip of the tongue. I mean, I'm sure that happens IRL sometimes, but "you forgot how perms work so you obviously killed your father!" really felt like a leap.
