They’re from different families. James was a rich kid, and Jessie was an orphan.

Personally I like non-binary James. Possibly non-binary Jessie also, honestly. They both had such a great genderweird vibe and I loved their love for each other.

As a genderfluid adult who talks to their cat, I'm starting to realize why Team Rocket was my favorite...

Well, they had a baby together eventually, so they're definitely a thing! I've always considered them both extremely fluid, both in gender and sexuality, and deeply in love with each other. It works out great. :D

Them having a baby is from one of the mangas though, it's not canon to the anime and the story changes quite a lot.

I always liked to think of both Jessie and James as being super gay, but since no one else will put up with them long-term they're stuck with each other as platonic life partners.

Same! I guess I headcanon James as bi, but mostly preferring men, and Jessie is really the only woman he’s attracted to.
