Not being on Crunchyroll doesn't make a show 'doomed to be unpopular' -- Made in Abyss and Dororo come to mind, both are on Amazon and both are quite popular. Netlix shows are an entirely different animal, if they end up unpopular it's because Netflix is too married to its binge watching model to realize that anime fans want to see the show as it airs in Japan, not three months later, so by the time the shows are actually available legally most of the hype has gone down. Carole & Tuesday probably would have been a big hit this season if it was allowed out of Netflix jail, I've been enjoying it and I've seen some positive chatter on twitter but the fact that you can only watch it via piracy (or wait however many months) is definitely putting a dent in its potential fanbase.
