Or maybe he realized that the kingdoms remaining united was important and a good thing and that even if they defeated the Night King, there could always be future threats. The North being independent is a stupid ending. All that means is when a new enemy comes in, the North dies first.

If the new idea is chosen leaders rather than bloodline leaders, then no I don't think it does. If they're going to go with that idea of kings being chosen for being the best for the job, then unity should be back on the table. The North deciding to be independent is going to give other kingdoms the urge to do the same thing. Soon you'll have seven separate kingdoms and wars all over again. The North isn't somehow more special than the other six kingdoms.

But why does it mean that the North dies first? And why does independence preclude making an alliance, as between equals?

That makes no fucking sense. You do know that independent nations can have allies? Did you know all the countries that fought together in WWII are independent countries?
