Oh, I don't know.

They've always been a weirdly big deal to people who pay attention to that kind of stuff. When I was 11 or so, I went to a state championship because my sister was in it and there were people in the audience who had no connection to any of the kids competing, they just came to watch. I did academic decathlon and other academic competitions and there wasn't even a third of the interest shown. People like to watch others compete, even kids. Sometimes especially kids. School sports is an example of this, even the sports you had no idea they did in schools (Archery, Water Polo, Badminton, etc.). While some competitions are more niche (4-H Fair projects, Chess, Go-karts, etc.), they still get some attention, but some just engage a wider audience. And some, like Double-dutch jump roping, Cup stacking, and Domino design competitions, can get really popular for a while and then go back to mostly being a niche thing.

But in this case, they literally ran out of words and had eight kids win. Eight. They have a list of words and then they have an alternate list if they go through the main list and I think they have a couple of others. The words have to be vetted because English is such an amalgamated language and if they don't know if there's an alternate spelling, then it isn't a fair competition.
