Ah, this makes me feel better about it! In Britain and Australia Remembrance Day is really serious - but knowing the historical context of Memorial Day explains a lot. Thinking of it as a kind of celebration, or Day of the Dead (which is only just over the border after all,) makes it a lot less of a culture shock.

Though the thing about mattress sales still gives me pause!
